Grand Junction Fire Department spokesman Mike Page says the man had "significant hypothermia." He had no other details on his condition.
Page says initial reports are that the man had gone onto the ice after a dog that was chasing a duck or goose around noon Tuesday. He says the dog was fine and running around when firefighters arrived.
KKCO-TV in Grand Junction reports ( http://bit.ly/107zHtx) the man held onto the edge of an ice shelf with one leg outside the water while firefighters tried to reach him.
A firefighter with a floating board swam to the hunter and helped him back to shore.
The hunter's identity wasn't released.
